Binance suspended all deposits and withdrawals on Thursday after estimating a security breach cost the exchange roughly $6.3 billion. The world's largest cryptocurrency platform confirmed the outage in a post on X, stating that the incident likely involved a compromised laptop belonging to a DevOps engineer. This breach allowed an attacker to access a service container and submit unauthorized withdrawal transactions.
The company froze approximately $3 billion in on-chain assets in collaboration with blockchain partners. Stablecoin providers Tether and Circle also moved to lock funds tied to the incident. Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire reported that the firm froze more than $800 million in currency in coordination with law enforcement. Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino said the company froze over $1.5 billion related to the potential hack. These actions aim to trace and freeze additional assets before they move further through the network.
Binance told users their funds are safe despite the temporary halt in operations. A company spokesperson stated that security teams are reviewing all relevant information with urgency. The exchange has not found evidence of any wallet private key leak, which would indicate a deeper compromise of user accounts. The company promised to share more technical details once the investigation is complete and the facts are fully verified. Teams are working around the clock to resolve the issue and provide updates through official channels.
Changpeng Zhao, the founder who stepped down as CEO in 2023, weighed in on the event via social media. Zhao, who pleaded guilty to a money laundering felony in 2023 and was pardoned by President Donald Trump in 2025, said the incident looks like a hack on Binance. He assured followers that user funds are safe and added that as a shareholder he expects all user funds to be fully covered. Zhao was released from prison last year after serving time for violating the Bank Secrecy Act.
The market reacted immediately to the news. Bitcoin prices dropped 3.2 percent on Thursday evening, falling below the $79,000 mark. The decline followed the announcement of the massive asset freeze and the suspension of trading. Investors are watching closely to see how quickly the exchange can restore normal operations and confirm the final scope of the damage. The incident marks one of the largest known security breaches in cryptocurrency history.
Binance was founded in 2017 and has since become the dominant player in global crypto trading. The company has faced regulatory scrutiny in the past, including Zhao's 2023 plea deal and subsequent pardon. Zhao and Binance have also been key supporters of various crypto enterprises associated with the Trump family. The current breach raises questions about the operational security of the platform that holds the most digital assets in the world.
Law enforcement agencies are involved in the investigation. Binance stated it works closely with issuers, blockchain intelligence firms, and industry partners to trace the stolen assets. The company is using these relationships to freeze additional funds and recover what was taken. The next few days will determine how much of the $6.3 billion can be reclaimed and when trading can resume without further risk to users.
The exchange will continue to monitor the situation and update its customers. Users should check official Binance channels for verified information. The temporary suspension of deposits and withdrawals remains in effect while security checks are completed. The full impact on the broader crypto market will become clearer as the investigation progresses and the final numbers are confirmed by the company.
