Eight months and nearly a week have passed since Nancy Guthrie disappeared from her Tucson home, and the case has now entered its ninth month. Authorities say they are taking that milestone as a prompt to accelerate forensic work.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department announced on Friday that a dedicated task force traveled to Florida to consult with DNA scientists. The goal, according to the department, was to determine what additional steps could be taken to advance the investigation. A statement posted on X noted that a number of ideas were discussed during the meeting and that the team continues to work with partners to find an answer.
Guthrie, 84, vanished in February. Federal authorities have described the incident as a kidnapping-for-ransom case. She is the mother of Savannah Guthrie, co-host of the TODAY show. The lack of major breakthroughs in recent months has kept the case in the national spotlight. In late July, federal law enforcement revealed that hair found during the search did not link to any potential suspects.
Savannah Guthrie has maintained a public presence to solicit help. In an Instagram post in August, she shared a photo of her mother and described the emotional toll on the family. She wrote, “There is a hole inside us that can never be filled. There is an ache that cannot be softened.” She added that the family has a determination to find out what happened so they can give her a proper goodbye.
The sheriff’s office emphasized that they need any information from the public. The department stated that no tip is too small and that even the smallest piece of information could be critical. They asked residents to call 88-CRIME or 1-800-CALL-FBI if they know something.
