New York City police arrested two men this week after finding them inside the city's sewer system in Manhattan. Officers spotted Samuel Reveron and Kevin Rodriguez, both 25, near the surface. The pair was later charged with criminal trespassing. When questioned, they stated they were looking for valuable objects, specifically gold, that might be trapped in the drains.
The arrests occurred in a busy part of Midtown Manhattan. The sight of the two men emerging from the underground infrastructure drew immediate attention from law enforcement. Investigators are currently reviewing security footage to determine if the arrested individuals were part of a larger group. Cameras in the area have previously captured other people entering and exiting the sewer lines.
This incident follows a similar event documented in May, where video showed two individuals descending into the system. Officials describe the trend as unusual and often futile. They note that it is practically impossible to locate items of value, such as gold or jewelry, within the complex underground network.
City authorities warn that the sewer system presents serious hazards. The network spans more than 12,000 kilometers. Inside these pipes, toxic gases accumulate, and the surfaces are prone to slipping. Officials also point to potential sources of infection within the wet environment. Despite these risks, groups of up to 15 people have been recorded entering the system at various points this year.
The city uses financial penalties to deter unauthorized entry. New York law allows for fines of up to $10,000 for simply moving a sewer manhole cover. If individuals illegally manipulate the infrastructure or commit trespassing, they can face prison sentences ranging from 30 to 90 days.
