Tesla announced this week that it has reached 1.74 million active Full Self-Driving subscriptions, a figure that represents a 67% increase over the past year. The company disclosed this total in its Q3 2026 shareholder letter, where it clarified that the count follows the specific definition outlined in the 2025 CEO Performance Award. Under this framework, the metric includes both those paying monthly fees and owners who purchased the software as a one-time upfront cost, effectively treating long-term buyers as current subscribers.

The methodology for counting these users is central to understanding the current numbers. Tesla ceased selling Full Self-Driving as a one-time purchase on February 14, 2026, shifting new customers to a $99 monthly subscription model in the United States. However, the 1.74 million figure retains all previous buyers who paid upfront, with some prices reaching $15,000, as long as their vehicles remain active. The only exclusion from this total is free trials, meaning the company does not distinguish between new monthly payers and legacy owners in this headline statistic.

This counting method is significant because reaching 10 million active Full Self-Driving subscriptions is a key operational milestone for Elon Musk’s 2025 compensation package. The award consists of 12 tranches, each requiring both a market capitalization target and an operational achievement. Other milestones in this plan include delivering 20 million vehicles, deploying one million Optimus robots, and operating one million robotaxis. As of June 30, Tesla considered only the 20 million delivery target to be probable, leaving the 10 million subscription goal as a distant prospect.

In addition to the total count, Tesla reported that more than 75% of new North American deliveries in Q3 included Full Self-Driving subscriptions. The company described this as a nearly twenty-point sequential increase and stated that it believes the software is driving demand in available markets. However, the letter did not define exactly how this attach rate is calculated, leaving unclear whether it includes introductory offers or accounts for buyer retention over time, unlike the active subscription metric which explicitly excludes free trials.

The pace of growth offers a realistic timeline for hitting the 10 million target. Tesla added 260,000 net subscriptions in Q3, its strongest quarter to date. If this rate continues, it would take approximately eight years to reach the milestone. Based on the average growth of the last 12 months, which was around 700,000 per year, the timeline could extend to nearly 12 years. The compensation award remains in effect until 2035, providing a long window for these targets to be met.

The company’s approach to reporting has drawn attention to how metrics are presented to investors. While counting upfront buyers is not inherently incorrect, labeling them as subscribers aligns the reported data with the specific requirements of the CEO’s pay package. Tesla has not yet disclosed how many of the 1.74 million users are currently paying the monthly fee, a detail that remains relevant for understanding the recurring revenue stream. The board’s definition of these metrics continues to shape the narrative around the company’s software momentum.

Looking ahead, the focus will likely remain on whether the high attach rate translates into sustained monthly payments. The 75% figure suggests strong initial adoption, but retention data will be crucial for validating the business model. With the compensation clock running until 2035, the next few quarters will provide further insight into whether the current growth trajectory can bridge the gap to the 10 million active subscription goal.
