A 34-year-old Anaheim man now faces a murder charge after prosecutors allege he stabbed a visitor to death in his bedroom on Oct. 24.
Orange County police responded to a report of a stabbing at a residence in the 700 block of North Pine Street. Officers found Ismael Pinedalopez covered in blood. The victim, Nicholas Garcia, 28, was discovered in the bed where Pinedalopez shared the room with his wife and their children. Garcia wore only underwear and had suffered multiple stab wounds. The wife, a 2-year-old daughter, and a 4-year-old son were in the room but sustained no physical injuries.
The Orange County District Attorney's Office announced the charges on Oct. 28. Prosecutors allege Pinedalopez used a pocketknife to repeatedly stab Garcia after finding him in the marital bed. Todd Spitzer, the district attorney, called the incident a tragedy witnessed by young children in their home. Senior Deputy District Attorney Mark Birney of the homicide unit will prosecute the case. Pinedalopez faces one felony count of murder under California Penal Code section 187(a). He also faces a sentencing enhancement for personally using a deadly weapon. If convicted on all counts, the maximum sentence is 26 years to life in state prison.
The defense may argue the killing occurred in the heat of passion following an unexpected discovery. Under state law, juries can weigh whether provocation was sufficient to reduce the charge to voluntary manslaughter. Prosecutors filed a murder charge, indicating they believe the evidence supports malice aforethought. No defense arguments have been presented in court yet.
The presence of the two young children has drawn attention to the psychological impact of the event. Child-trauma experts note that exposure to severe domestic violence can cause lasting harm and often requires extensive counseling. Prosecutors emphasized this concern when announcing the charges.
Relationship-related violence remains a recurring factor in homicide investigations across Orange County. Local agencies have handled multiple homicide cases this year, including gang-related killings in Santa Ana and cold-case arrests in Anaheim. Criminologists observe that many homicides involve people who know one another rather than random strangers.
Pinedalopez was scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday in Orange County Superior Court. Investigators and attorneys will focus on the timeline of events inside the home leading up to the confrontation. He remains presumed innocent until proven guilty.
