Options traders are positioning heavily against Chipotle ahead of its quarterly earnings report, which is scheduled for release after market close on October 28. While major corporations such as Microsoft, Google, T-Mobile, and Ford also report results on the same day, trading activity in the restaurant chain's stock has drawn particular attention from market participants.
Volume in Chipotle options rose sharply on Tuesday, reaching a level more than eight times the stock's monthly average. The flow of trades favored bearish bets. Approximately 240,000 put contracts changed hands, while fewer than 17,000 call contracts traded. Roughly $8 million in premiums flowed into the put side of the market.
A large portion of that premium came from a specific maneuver by a single trader. That participant bought back 56,000 put options with a $25 strike price expiring on November 6. The trader then sold the same number of put options with a $22.50 strike price expiring in mid-December. This action, known as a roll, moves the position to a lower price point and a later expiration date. Analysts often view such a move as a signal of weakening confidence, especially as Chipotle shares approach the original strike price.
Another distinct trade showed an outright bearish wager. At approximately 11:30 a.m. Eastern time, a buyer purchased 7,500 put options with a $28 strike price expiring on November 20. The transaction cost $1.1 million. This position generates profit only if Chipotle shares decline by another 5% over the following three and a half weeks.
Jason DeLorenzo, founder and owner of the options positioning platform Volland, described the activity as earnings plays. He noted that their data showed customers generally held bearish views. DeLorenzo cited historical data to support this outlook. He stated that the last time Chipotle implied move before earnings was this low was in July 2025, a period when the stock suffered a sharp decline.
Technical analysts are also monitoring the $27 price level. This figure marks the shoulder line of a head and shoulders chart pattern that has been in place since January 2021. Technicians frequently treat a break below such a ridge line as a bearish signal for the asset.
