The quiet rhythm of a congressional race was interrupted by federal intervention when a teenager in North Texas was taken into custody on suspicion of plotting an assassination.

According to campaign officials, the 17-year-old resident of McKinney was arrested by the Federal Bureau of Investigation on October 5. It was not until the following day, October 6, that Rep. Keith Self’s team was notified of the detention by the U.S. Capitol Police. The congressman represents Texas’ third congressional district and is currently seeking a third term in office. Investigators indicated to the campaign that the suspect had been under federal surveillance and was believed to be radicalized. They further conveyed that the teen was planning a terrorist attack in the name of ISIS, with the specific intent of targeting Self at a chili cook-off fundraiser for veterans scheduled for October 17. The event was set to feature former Dallas Cowboys players and other prominent guests. As of the latest reports, the FBI’s Dallas office has not yet responded to inquiries for additional details.

Rep. Self, who is actively campaigning, stated that his security posture was adjusted immediately upon learning of the threat. He noted that while he always maintained a security detail, the team increased its situational awareness. Self cited his background in military combat zones as a factor that kept his response measured. He explained that individuals without prior experience in such environments often react with panic, but his familiarity with high-stress scenarios allowed for a calmer assessment. He focused on determining whether the suspect was operating alone. His wife, who has been a military spouse for 25 years, also took the risk seriously, given her history of supporting a partner in active duty roles.

The stakes of this incident appear higher than previous threats Self has received, as this is the first time an arrest has been made in connection with a plot against him. While acknowledging the gravity of the situation, Self emphasized that the investigation was ongoing and the suspect’s identity has not been made public. The alleged plot has added a layer of tension to an already contentious political landscape in the district.

The timing of the arrest coincides with Self’s recent legislative moves, including a nonbinding concurrent resolution introduced in September that denounces Sharia law and asserts the supremacy of the U.S. Constitution. This stance aligns with local debates in McKinney, where the city council unanimously approved an expansion plan for a local mosque in August. That decision followed hours of heated public comment and subsequent efforts to recall several council members. The interplay between local religious infrastructure and state-level political rhetoric may provide context for the alleged motives, though federal investigators have not publicly detailed the suspect’s specific ideological drivers beyond the ISIS affiliation.

Despite the alleged threat, Self attended the October 17 fundraiser as planned. He described the event as delightful, noting that he judged 19 different chilies and three pots of beans without incident. Since then, he has maintained his campaigning schedule, including recent poll-greeting sessions. He stated that the event will not deter him from communicating what he views as a critical political message to voters. His Democratic opponent in the midterm election, Evan Hunt, publicly condemned the plot on social media, adding to the scrutiny surrounding the race.

For now, the focus remains on the federal investigation and the continued security measures surrounding the congressman. The case highlights the evolving nature of threats facing elected officials, particularly those in swing districts with active local debates over cultural and religious issues.
