Dallas Mavericks guard Kyrie Irving and rookie Cooper Flagg combined for 47 points and 17 assists on Monday night to secure a road victory over the Miami Heat. The pair, who have played together in regular season games for less than a week, displayed immediate chemistry that has silenced some trade chatter surrounding the 34-year-old veteran.

Irving had not suited up for Dallas in more than 18 months due to a torn left ACL sustained in March 2025. He used an informal minicamp in Southern California in early September to build rapport with his new core. That core now centers on Flagg, the 2025 No. 1 overall pick, whom Irving calls his "19-year-old co-pilot."

The Mavericks have undergone a massive organizational shift since the 2024 NBA Finals. General manager Nico Harrison was fired last November after trading Luka Doncic. His replacement, Masai Ujiri, hired in May, has stated he has a "huge curiosity" about the pairing of Irving and Flagg. The 15-year age gap between the two players fuels speculation that Irving, an eight-time All-Star, may be moved in the next offseason.

Irving holds a player option for next season worth $42.4 million. This clause gives him leverage in potential negotiations. Ujiri has publicly stated, "We truly believe in [Irving]," signaling the team's intent to keep the guard for at least another year. Irving said he is "in love with this place" and wants no distractions in the locker room.

The on-court fit has been productive since the start of the season. In the season opener against Houston, Flagg scored 32 points while Irving was the focus of the Rockets' defensive strategy. Irving is currently on a minutes restriction as a precaution. On Friday, he and Flagg combined for 27 points and eight assists in the first half of a win over Indiana before Flagg left with a mild left shoulder sprain.

Flagg returned for Monday's game in Miami, finishing with 29 points, six rebounds, 11 assists, five steals and three blocks. He blocked a potential go-ahead shot by Andrew Wiggins in the final minute. Irving said his role is to "alleviate some of that pressure" on Flagg, who is coming off Rookie of the Year honors.

Irving has played 130 games for Dallas since arriving via trade in February 2023. He is now the team's longest-serving player after center Dwight Powell was waived in the preseason. Flagg averaged 21.0 points and 4.5 assists as a rookie, with his efficiency improving when he played beside a traditional point guard.
