Canelo Alvarez faces Christian Mbilli in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Saturday.
Alvarez enters the ring as the challenger in a fight for the WBC super middleweight title. The bout is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET on DAZN pay-per-view. This marks the first time Alvarez has challenged for a title since May 2022. He lost the WBA light heavyweight belt to Dmitry Bivol during that period. Mbilli holds the championship after being elevated to full champion in January. The WBC stripped Terence Crawford of the belt, which Mbilli won by defeating Maciej Sulecki in June 2025.
The two fighters present distinct physical profiles. Alvarez is 63-3-2 with 39 knockouts. Mbilli is 29-0-1 with 24 knockouts. Alvarez gives up one inch in height and nearly two inches in reach. Despite these disadvantages, he remains the betting favorite. DraftKings lists Alvarez at -330 to win. The odds for Mbilli to win in the first three rounds stand at +10,000. Alvarez is -135 to win by decision or technical decision.
Experience is a major differentiator in this matchup. Alvarez turned professional in October 2005 at age 15. He has fought in 28 major title bouts with a record of 25-3. Mbilli has never contested a full world title. He has competed in two interim title fights. The fighters have never shared a common opponent in their combined 98 professional bouts. Neither fighter has ever been knocked down.
CompuBox data reveals sharply different fighting styles. Mbilli averages 78 punches per round in his last five fights. That total is 27 punches higher than the division average of 51. Alvarez is more selective, averaging 35.1 punches per round. Mbilli throws 57.7 power punches per round and lands 26.6. Alvarez throws 19.6 power punches and lands 8.8. Over a 12-round distance, Mbilli connects on 46.1% of his power punches. Alvarez connects on 44.9%. Both figures exceed the division average of 36.1%.
Defensive metrics suggest Alvarez may have an advantage in that department. Alvarez's opponents land only 31.2% of their power punches against him. That rate ranks sixth among super middleweight champions and contenders. They average 5.3 landed power punches per round against Alvarez, which is the eighth best figure in the division. In his last fight, Lester Martinez landed 49% of his power punches against Mbilli.
Jabbing is a weakness for both boxers. Mbilli lands 3.8 jabs per round out of 20.3 thrown. His landing percentage is 18.7%. Alvarez lands 3.5 jabs per round out of 15.5 thrown. His landing percentage is 22.6%. Both rates fall below the division average of 4.2 jabs landed per round.
