Drew Doughty scored a goal and recorded two assists as the Los Angeles Kings defeated the New York Rangers 6-3 on Monday night. The victory ended the Rangers' six-game home winning streak at Madison Square Garden and marked the first time a visiting team won at the venue this season.
The Kings, who finished their first six games of the season without a win, have won three of their last four contests. All three victories occurred on the road. This result extends their streak of wins against New York to six games.
Taylor Ward opened the scoring 1 minute and 15 seconds into the game. He took a pass from Doughty in the neutral zone and split two Rangers defenders to score on a breakaway. Ward credited a strong defensive zone breakout by Trevor Moore and Doughty for setting up the play.
Brandt Clarke extended the lead to 2-0 at 4:52 of the first period by deflecting a slap shot from Joel Armia. Doughty added a third goal for Los Angeles with a one-timer from the left point, his first goal in 25 regular-season games.
The Rangers pulled goaltender James Reimer after the first period. Reimer allowed three goals on eight shots in his New York debut. He had played only one game this fall, a 35-save shutout in the American Hockey League on Saturday, before signing an NHL contract on Sunday.
Dylan Garand, who had started every game since Igor Shesterkin suffered a season-ending injury on Oct. 9, stopped 15 of 17 shots faced after replacing Reimer. The Rangers had been relying on Garand to manage the workload during the goaltending crisis.
Artemi Panarin, a former Ranger, scored a power-play goal 90 seconds into the second period. He also provided a secondary assist on Doughty's first-period goal. Mikey Anderson scored later in the second period to give the Kings a 5-1 lead.
J.T. Miller scored for New York when a slap shot from Tye Kartye deflected off his skate and past Kings goaltender Darcy Kuemper. Adam Fox and Kartye added late goals for the Rangers, while Joel Edmundson scored into an empty net for Los Angeles. Kuemper made 23 saves in the win.
Twelve Kings skaters recorded points in the victory. Coach Peter Laviolette noted that the team played fast and made good decisions. The Kings finish their five-game road trip on Tuesday night against Chicago.
