Kylian Mbappe scored two goals for Real Madrid on Sunday, securing a 2-1 victory over Barcelona at Camp Nou. The performance capped a season milestone for the French forward, who reached his 100th career goal for the club in the match.
The brace lifted Mbappe's total to 14 goals in all competitions for the 2025-26 season. He is currently the second-highest scorer in La Liga. The goals came one day before the Ballon d'Or ceremony, where he is considered a leading contender for the award.
The result ended Barcelona's nine-match winning streak in the Spanish top flight. Real Madrid became the first team to defeat Barcelona in the league this season. Had the home side won, they would have broken the record for the best start in La Liga history, a mark set by Real Madrid in the 1968-69 season.
This was also Barcelona's second consecutive loss, following a defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League earlier in the week. The result shifted the all-time head-to-head record between the two clubs. Real Madrid now holds 107 victories in El Clasico history, one more than Barcelona's 106.
Real Madrid enters this fixture in third place in the La Liga standings with 24 points. Barcelona leads the table with 27 points, while Atletico Madrid sits in second with 25. The gap between the top two teams has narrowed to three points after ten matches played in the season.
Manager Jose Mourinho, who returned to Real Madrid after two trophy-less seasons for the club, celebrated the win with a knee slide. He noted that the team is playing for the championship rather than just the match. Real Madrid has won five consecutive matches across all competitions, including three league games and two Champions League fixtures.
The victory marks a turnaround for Real Madrid, which had suffered defeats to Real Betis and Atletico Madrid last month. Mbappe, who joined Real Madrid from PSG in 2024, is the 27-year-old center of the attack. He won the World Cup Golden Boot and finished as the top scorer in both La Liga and the Champions League during the previous campaign.
