The 2026 Ballon d'Or will be awarded at the London Palladium within 24 hours. The selection process has narrowed to three candidates: Lamine Yamal, Kylian Mbappe, and Harry Kane.
Yamal, a 19-year-old winger for Barcelona and Spain, and Mbappe, the 2018 World Cup champion for France, have both publicly campaigned for the honor. Kane, who has scored extensively for England, has remained more reserved in his promotion of his own candidacy.
Predictive models show a divided outlook. Avisia, a French data analysis firm, identifies Yamal as the favorite with a 23 percent probability of winning. It places Kane second at 21 percent and Mbappe third at 19 percent. Rodri, the 2024 winner, also holds a 19 percent chance, while Lionel Messi trails at 18 percent for a potential ninth title. Avisia noted it correctly predicted the top five candidates for the 2025 award, which Ousmane Dembele won. Bookmakers present a different picture, listing Kane as the outright favorite with approximately a 70 percent likelihood.
Opinions among football figures vary widely. Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone supports Messi, citing his performance after the World Cup despite his recent retirement from international play. Former Italy international Marco Materazzi agreed, describing Messi as being in a different league at age 38. Jude Bellingham, who is also on the shortlist, endorsed Kane for his work ethic. Anthony Gordon backed his Barcelona teammate Yamal, while Real Madrid teammate Aurelien Tchouameni praised Mbappe's incredible season.
Statistical records offer strong arguments for both Mbappe and Kane. Mbappe led La Liga with 25 goals and the Champions League with 15. He also won the World Cup Golden Boot and set a record for most World Cup goals with 12. Kane recorded 73 goals last season, the highest total by any player since Messi scored 82 in 2011-12.
Trophy collections complicate the statistical arguments. Mbappe did not win a major title with his club or country. Kane won the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich but finished third at the World Cup with England. Yamal holds the advantage in silverware, having won the World Cup with Spain and La Liga with Barcelona. Although injury affected his personal statistics this season, his team success aligns with historical trends. Only four of the previous 19 Ballon d'Or winners failed to secure the Champions League, World Cup, European Championship, or Copa America in their winning year.
A victory for Yamal would set a new age record for the award. The current benchmark is held by Brazil's Ronaldo, who won at age 21 in 1997.
